World Peace day originally marked a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. However,
as the years progressed, world peace day became a day where individuals took it upon
themselves to commemorate peace, through education and public awareness. This year,
our school was no exception. On Sunday morning, during the 10th graders’ welcome
assembly, we stood for a minute in silence as a reflection of peace. White doves are often
used to mark important milestones of life and offerings of hope at weddings and birthdays,
mainly because they symbolize peace.
Following the welcome assembly, there was a gathering in the quadrangle during the girls’
break where Mr. Kingston released a white dove. After this there were two performances
by the 8th and 9th graders where they sang songs relating to peace which undoubtedly
moved a majority of the audience, who participated by singing along and clapping. The day
concluded with a light and happy atmosphere.
The next day, students brought their art supplies and ideas to make posters and design
quotes which were put on display within our classes and in the corridors. On Tuesday the
girls’ section buzzed with excitement and anticipation, as we were called to the turf while
wearing a white t-shirt and cap during break. We stood in the formation of a peace sign,
marking the day that everyone won’t forget anytime soon as we all felt a sense of unity and
hope. To conclude the week, teachers incorporated topics relating to peace in our subjects,
which brought a sense of understanding as to how we can make use of our education to
make a change and hopefully progress in our aim of attaining worldwide peace, one step at
a time.
