Exams: How to prepare?

With the exams season getting closer and closer, tension is slowly building up and students are scrambling to finish notes and start revision and yet a lot of us are still looking around for motivation, for a trick that makes it all easier.

To think that there is one secret glorious trick for everyone to learn everything quickly - and then remember it all - is a bit of wishful thinking. There is no trick. No shortcut. The real obstacle is to find the perfect blend of concentration and relaxation that lets you absorb what you learn. And that blend is different for different people.

Find the mood that suits you
Some people prefer perfect silence. Some like the buzz of background noise of other people. Some prefer music. Find out what works for you. What lets you relax but doesn’t distract you. Go out to a coffee shop for a couple of hours with your books (that always works for me), change your surroundings now and then so you wont get bored. With technology now you can simulate pretty much anything - if you like the sound of rain and a crackling fireplace when you study you can find them on endless loops on youtube!

Some people are ‘in the mood’ more at certain times of day. They are called ‘Peak Mental Hours’. For most people it’s at late morning (9 to 12) and in the afternoon (5 to 8). Find out when is your peak mental hour and schedule most of your studying for then.

Dont fret
If you are studying chemistry, don’t keep worrying about all the chapters in all the other subjects that are left. In fact, don’t think about anything that would worry you and take away your concentration. In that moment only you and the material in front of you should exist.

Take breaks
Don’t cram. Don’t exhaust your brain. And for the love of God don’t stay up all night! Especially the night before the exam: Watch a movie. Listen to music. Read fiction. Let go of the tension. If you go into the hall, scared, dreading the paper you are done for. Relax.

Picture
Use all your resources
If you are stuck at something, don’t panic. There is always an answer and a million videos and websites that can help you find it. If the text book isn’t working for you, take out the syllabus, find out what you need and find it somewhere else. It is true that some people understand better when they read something and some get it better when they watch a video, or draw diagrams. Find out what works for you.

Spend energy on the content you're trying to learn
Studying actually works when your brain is actively involved. Don’t expect it to understand things on the first try. Don’t expect it to remember things if it has only passively been fed by either just reading or just listening. So what does active mean? you should try to visualize the things you are reading about. Concentrate until you can see them happening.

Explain them to yourself without looking at the book. Draw them out. Talk yourself through it till it clicks. Again, whatever works for YOU!

A new season - By sara Ali

Fashion trends come and go like seasons and with the fast approaching spring there are whole new trends to explore. Spring is all about dressing it up and this section is going to talk about exactly that.

Clothing
To begin with, you need to know your style. Pick and choose clothing that suit both your personal style and preferences. Wear an outfit that defines you - screams YOU! You can make a statement without having to dress up like everyone else. And of course, make sure you are comfortable in what you are wearing. Pick clothes that won't make you feel too hot or too cold. If you want to look good in what you wear, you need to feel good in it as well. And last, but definitely not least, the key is to accessorize and mix and match. Try out different necklaces and bracelets. Throw in a scarf to that outfit as well - whatever you think looks good.

Hair
You can style your hair as you please. Wear it up, wear it down. It's all in your hands! If you want to wear it down, make sure to brush it well, keep it clean to avoid greasiness and most importantly, accessorize. You can pick and choose from silk scarves, floral crowns, bow headbands, turban headbands and embellished headbands if you're feeling edgy. Again, whatever suits your personal preferences. Now, if you want to wear it up, we suggest that you use as many bobby pins to keep your hair in place and avoid any fly-aways. You can accessorize with cute barrettes, clips and bows. Very simple, but very cute!

Ingredients

-250 ml (8 fl oz) water
-250 g ( 8 oz) caster sugar
-125 g (4 oz) unsalted butter
-2 tablespoons cocoa powder sifted
-1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
-2 tablespoons of instant coffee
-225 g ( 7 1/2 oz ) self-raising flour
-2 eggs lightly beaten
-12 chocolate covered coffee beans for decorating.

Icing

-150 g ( 5 oz ) plain dark chocolate, broken into pieces
-150 g ( 5 oz ) unsalted butter diced
-2 tablespoons golden syrup

Instructions

Put the water and sugar in a saucepan and heat gently, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved. Stir in the butter, cocoa powder, baking soda and instant coffee and bring to a boil. Simmer for 5 minutes, remove from the heat and set aside to cool.
Beat  the flour and eggs into the cooled coffee and chocolate mixture until smooth. Divide the mixture evenly among the foil cake cups arranged in a 12-hole deep muffin tin. Bake in a preheated oven,  180 degrees C, Gas Mark 4, for 20 minutes until risen and firm. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

- Making the icing:

Put the chocolate, butter and syrup in a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan of gently simmering water, stirring until melted. Remove from the heat and leave to cool to room temperature, then chill until thickened. Spread over the cupcakes, top with a chocolate covered coffee bean and leave to set.
