I remember my friend bothering me for months to read The Unbecoming Of Mara Dyer because she thought I would love it. I also remember her telling me that I’d love the protagonist, Mara Dyer, because she was Indian and reminded her of me (haha!). Well, truth be told I did love her. I loved her because she wasn’t some overly perfect, overly beautiful, unreal female lead but was flawed, like every other ‘normal’ teenager who isn’t fictional which made her very easy to relate to. She goes through a lot after an ‘incident’ but her sarcasm keeps the drama at bay which, in my opinion, was a plus.
The book revolves around her and her ‘love interest’, Noah Shaw, whose charm, wit, (and hair) would have made every girl swoon over him. But what made him even more attractive was the depth of his sensitive, patient, understanding personality. He may seem ‘perfect’ but he wasn’t. You’d just have to read the book to see how imperfect he really was.
Michelle Hodkin creates some of the best characters I’ve ever read and come to love, giving them life with her exceptional writing. She took the incredibly hard task of writing in first person, of delving into the characters’ minds and feelings and she made it seem effortless with the easy flow of language.
The plot, too, was breathtaking. I couldn’t put the book down. From the very first line, I knew this book would become one of my favorites. There was action throughout the book but it neither overwhelmed the reader nor did it drag like most books do. And even though the book really picked up one third through, you never felt like you were wasting your time. It was intense, humorous, relatable and beautifully written. It wasn’t just a typical Young Adult cliché; the psychological and supernatural elements in it were a pleasant surprise. A must read for every teenager who loves a psychological twist on an ever so predictable love story.
